Pearl Care - Necklace Bracelet Earrings

pearl jewelry care

Pearls are soft compared to other gemstones and jewels. Pearls are best kept in a soft cloth pouch or a soft lined jewelry box or compartment.

Do not shower or swim with your pearls. Heat and dry air can also crack or discolor pearls over time. It is best to put your pearls on after applying makeup, perfume and hair spray, all of which can damage the nacre of pearls.

Wiping the pearls with a soft damp cloth after you wear them will ensure that they remain free from build-up of harmful chemicals. Periodically, pearls should be washed with a mild soap. Never use detergent, baking soda, powdered cleansers, bleaching agents, or ammonia-based cleaners to clean pearls. A bit of olive oil may be rubbed into your pearls to enhance shine.

If you wear your pearls often, they should be restrung about once a year to prevent strand breakage. The string should be knotted between each pearl to prevent all the pearls in a strand from falling off should a break occur.
