Pearl necklaces come in two basic styles - strand necklaces and pendant necklaces. Pearl strand necklaces feature multiple pearls strung close together. Traditionally, the better pearl strand necklaces are strung on silk, but you may pearl choker necklaces strung on nylon and wire also.
For classic, quality pearl necklace, choose Akoya pearls. For a more affordable gift, choose a freshwater pearl necklace. For something a little exotic, select Tahitian black pearls present dramatic color. And for something truly special, pick South Sea pearls.
Pearl necklaces come in a variety of different lengths and styles for different fashions and occasions. Often strand necklaces are graduated, meaning the pearls gradually increase in size with the largest pearl at the center and the smallest pearls at the ends. Some of the more common styles include the following.
Bib pearl necklace
A bib necklace is comprised of multiple strands of varying lengths so that the shorter strands fit higher around the neck than the longer strands.
Collar pearl necklace (12 - 13")
A collar pearl necklace has a Victorian look and is often made up of two or more strands worn high on the neck. A variation is the dog collar necklace which features multiple pearl strands.
Choker pearl necklace (14 - 16")
A choker pearl necklace is similar to a collar necklace but designed to rest on the collarbone. Pearl chokers come in all different styles of their own.
Princess pearl necklace (17 - 19")
A princess-length pearl necklace will go with almost anything and any neckline - from dinner dresses to T-shirts and jeans. The strand normally lays on the upper part of the chest.
Matinee pearl necklace (20 - 24")
A mid-length matinee pearl necklace is popular with business suits or dresses. The matinee is most suited for semi-formal occasions.
Opera pearl necklace (28 - 34")
The opera pearl necklace is normally a single strand. An Opera pearl necklace is best suited for formal engagements in evening dresses. The opera necklace may be worn as a long elegant single strand or doubled on itself for a shorter length. Normally, an opera necklace should fall below the bust line.
Rope pearl necklace (45" +)
The rope pearl necklace, sometimes called a satoir, is very luxurious and can have clasps along the length to help you break it down into shorter necklace and bracelet combinations. Rope necklaces are also often twisted or knotted for shorter lengths.
Torsade pearl necklace
A torsade pearl necklace is comprised of multiple strands twisted together and held with a clasp. The most common type of Torsade is made with freshwater pearls.
